We have heard the statement many times, “The safest place
for a Christian is the will of God.” But in order to be doing the will of God,
we must know what His will is.

The will of God is quite a study in itself, but I am going
to have us look at one aspect of it. God said, “Ye are the salt of the earth:
but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is
thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot
of men. ” Mt. 5:13

God’s will is for us to be salt. How many of us have lost
our savour? How many of us are no longer being what we should be for the Lord?
I heard a really great quote from a Pastor, “We are called to be thermostats,
not thermometers.” We are not there to just see that things aren’t going right,
and do nothing about it. We are to be doing those things we can do, to change
the circumstances around us. So, how do we be that salt? Well, let’s look at
what Salt is.

1.       Salt kills

Salt can be used to kill of weeds. Salt can be used to kill
of stumps. Salt can also kill of what you actually wanted to keep, like your
plants.

Sometimes we may have to become a salt to those around us.
Sometimes we may have to point out sin, or point out false doctrines, or
correct dangerous actions of those around us.

2.       Salt heals

When I was a little girl, if I had a sore throat, my Mom
often had me gargle with warm water and salt. It wasn’t because she wanted me
to choke, but because salt has a way of healing. Many people have used salt on
all kinds of wounds.

When you put salt on a wound, often it doesn’t feel very
good. It burns, or stings, and feels like it will make things worse, but it
really can help it to heal.

As salt, we should be helping to heal the hurt in the lives
around us. Sometimes it may actually seem to sting, and make things worse. How
can it help a hurting heart, to tell them that what they are doing is not a
good idea? But sometimes that is just what they need to hear, in order for them
to heal.

3.       Salt
preserves

We use salt on meats to keep it from spoiling as fast. What
causes it to spoil? Bad elements getting to it.

We as salt should be reaching those around us who, maybe
they aren’t so much hurting, but they are angry, or they are bitter, or they
have a possibility of becoming that way. Our salt can keep those feelings from
coming, or at least from taking root. By preserving them, we are able to keep
them from becoming useless.

None of these can we do on our own, though. As salt, we must
be in tune with the Holy Spirit, He is the one who will show us how, and when,
and what we should say.

Salt kills, heals, and preserves….you need to know when to
use the salt, and how much.

Colossians 4:6

Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt,
that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.

The salt cannot be too much, or it will ruin the product.
Ever had a bowl of soup that was too salty? It ruins the whole bowl, doesn’t
it? We can put too much salt out there, and cause our testimony to be ruined.
We must ask the Holy Spirit to guide us. He is willing, and able. I am
learning, slowly, but surely, what His purpose is in my life. It isn’t a
one-time deal, “Well, I asked the Holy Spirit to help me last month, so now I
am good for a year.” We must ask Him daily. We must ask Him every moment.
“Lord, help me know how to answer this person.” It’s not easy. Our flesh wants
to do everything on our own, but we can’t. “Without me ye can do nothing” John
15:5 “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” Phil 4:13

You see, as we are the salt, it will cause this world that
is already thirsty, but often doesn’t realize it, to become even
thirstier.  Salt also makes you thirsty,
right? Well, we know the Living Water. He is willing to draw all men to Him,
but they have to come to Him. How will they do that, if they don’t know that
they are thirsty? As we are living our lives in a way that is a salt, it will
cause them to be thirsty for what we have, that they don’t have.

May God help us be the salt we are supposed to be.
